At the traditional tsipouro bar of the Demiris family, in the district of Nea Ionia, the freshest of seafood take centre stage, in the same navy setting, for twenty years now. Hard clams, grooved sea squirts, mussels, Noah’s Arks and sea urchins are just some of them; they all smell of ozone and are “fished” daily. The list also includes grilled octopus on tsitsiravla –namely, the tips of the wild pistachio tree– and velvety taramosalata. The fried chub mackerels are also a reason to visit the place. The frying pan is handled masterfully, and the tsipouro is strong.
